The Summer Entrance Examination for the Graduate School (to be held in August 2024)

General Information (for both Master's and Doctoral Programs)

Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and Department of Urban Management, hold a joint entrance examination for Master's and Doctoral Programs.

This page provides information on admissions and entrance examinations held in August 2024 for the Master's program starting in April 2025, and the Doctoral program starting in October 2024 or April 2025

The Guidelines and application forms for the Master's and Doctoral Programs are available for download. Please note that hard copies will not be provided.

Study Area and Supervisor

Applicants should contact the supervising professors of their preferred study areas and discuss application in advance.
Each study area corresponds to one of the laboratories listed here (Civil and Earth Resources Engineering) and here (Urban Management). Research details are also described in these pages.

Online Guidance Session on the Entrance Examinations

A guidance session on the summer graduate school entrance examination will be held as follows (for both Master's and Doctoral program admissions).

Date : May 16 (Thursday), 2024
          17:00 - 17:30 (in Japanese)
          17:40 - 18:20 (in English)

Place : Online (Zoom)

Possible Changes due to COVID-19

There is a possibility that the entrance examination and test details may change due to the situation with COVID-19. If any changes are made, updated information will be posted on the Graduate School of Engineering website and this page. Please check these sites regularly for the latest information.

Be sure to check both the common part for all divisions/departments and the part for each division/department. Please be careful not to miss any separate documents that need to be submitted and to prepare them well ahead of the deadline.

August 6 (Tuesday) and 7 (Wednesday), 2024

Examination Type

(1) General Academic Selection
(2) Special Selection of Non-Civil, Environmental and Resources Students Type I
(3) Special Selection of Non-Civil, Environmental and Resources Students Type II
(4) Special Selection of Career-Track Working Students
(5) Special Selection of International Students

Examination Subjects and Scope of Examination

1) General Academic Selection (total of 1,000 points)
(a) English (200 points):
Submission of a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS official score
(b) Mathematics and Physics (mechanics) (200 points)
Candidates must take the examination for mathematics and physics(mechanics).
(c) Specialized Engineering Knowledge (600 points)
Select three subjects from the following seven subjects.
(i) Structural Mechanics
(ii) Hydraulics
(iii) Soil Mechanics
(iv) Systems Analysis for Planning and Management
(v) Earth Resources Engineering

For examination types other than the General Academic Selection, please consult with the supervising professor in your preferred study area.

Program Selection

1) Available programs

Students who have passed the Master's program entrance examination for the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and the Department of Urban Management can enroll one of the three programs listed below.

  • Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program
    (Laboratory of Applied Mechanics / Laboratory of Human Security Engineering)
  • Advanced Engineering Course Program
    (Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering / Department of Urban Management)
  • Master's Course Program
    (Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering / Department of Urban Management)

2) Program selection and assignment

Applicants’ course assignment will be determined on the basis of their preference and entrance examination results. Their preference will be stated in “Selection of Course Program” (Form M2) on application.

Additionally, applicants can borrow printed copies of the past three years' examination papers (full text) at the Student Section of C-Cluster Office, Katsura Campus, in exchange for their identification card.

Doctoral Program

Examination Subjects and Scope of Examination

1) General academic selection (total of 1,000 points)
(a) English proficiency (200 points):
Submission of a TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS official score
(b) Oral Exam I (400 points)
An oral examination of about 30 minutes is conducted concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
(c) Oral Exam II (400 points)
The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted.  Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
2) Special selection of career-track working students (total of 1,000 points)
(a) Short essay (500 points)
An essay is assigned concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
(b) Oral Exam (500 points)
The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted.  Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
3) Selection by draft doctoral dissertation (total of 1,000 points)
(a) Examination of draft doctoral dissertation (pass or not)
(b) Oral Exam (1,000 points)
The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted thesis draft, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted.  Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.
4) Special Selection of international students to Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program, Postgraduate Integrated Course Program of Human Security Engineering (total of 1,000 points) 
(a) Oral Exam I (500 points) 
An oral examination of about 30 minutes is conducted concerning the applicant's basic scholastic ability, with emphasis on Master's Program research content or a field related to the applicant's work content.
(b) Oral Exam II (500 points) 
The applicant makes an oral presentation (15 minutes or less) based on the separately submitted document, Research Experience and Study / Research Plan, and an oral examination (about 30 minutes, including the presentation) is conducted. Use of a personal computer and a projector in the oral presentation is permitted.

Students who have passed the Doctoral program entrance examination for the Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering and the Department of Urban Management can enroll one of the three programs listed below. 

  • Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program
    (Laboratory of Applied Mechanics / Laboratory of Human Security Engineering)
  • Advanced Engineering Course Program
    (Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering / Department of Urban Management)

Please note that students who have passed the Special Selection of International Students for “Human Security Engineering” are limited to enrolling in the Human Security Engineering Postgraduate Integrated Course Program of Interdisciplinary Engineering Course Program.
